Qatar, UAE Rally Behind Kuwait as Iraq Files Disputed Map with UN

(MENAFN) Qatar and the United Arab Emirates have thrown their full weight behind Kuwait's sovereign rights over its maritime territories, responding with rare urgency after Iraq submitted updated maritime coordinates and a revised map to the United Nations that Kuwait says encroach upon its waters.

Qatar's Foreign Ministry issued a sharply worded statement Monday on X, the social media platform owned by U.S. entrepreneur Elon Musk, making clear where Doha stands on the escalating dispute.

"The State of Qatar announces its full solidarity with the sisterly State of Kuwait, affirming that it is following the coordinates lists and map submitted by the sisterly Republic of Iraq to the United Nations, which infringe upon the sovereignty of the State of Kuwait over its maritime areas and its fixed and stable maritime elevations in relation to the Republic of Iraq, such as Fasht Al-Qaid and Fasht Al-Aij," Qatar's Foreign Ministry said.

The UAE's Ministry of Foreign Affairs echoed that position, reaffirming Abu Dhabi's unequivocal support for Kuwait's legitimate rights while voicing pointed concern over Baghdad's UN filing. Abu Dhabi urged all parties to resolve the matter through established legal frameworks.

"The Ministry called for this matter to be addressed with a spirit of responsibility and seriousness, in accordance with the principles of international law and the provisions of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea of 1982 (UNCLOS), as well as in line with existing bilateral understandings, agreements and memoranda of understanding," the UAE statement read.

Abu Dhabi further pressed Iraq to honor the "fraternal and historic ties that bind the two countries and their peoples" — language reflecting the diplomatic weight Gulf states are attaching to the row.

The crisis escalated Saturday when Kuwait summoned Iraq's chargé d'affaires to formally protest Baghdad's UN submission, denouncing the filing as a direct violation of its sovereignty. Kuwait's Foreign Ministry said the submitted claims encompass disputed maritime zones and fixed geographical features — including Fasht Al-Qaid and Fasht Al-Aij — which Kuwait insists are not subject to negotiation and remain firmly under its sovereign authority.
